Beyond price — why independents often win:
Where the dealer still wins:
The smart split: Use an independent for routine maintenance, tires, brakes, suspension, and general diagnostics. Use the dealer for warranty work, recalls, software updates, and anything involving the 800V high-voltage system that your independent can't diagnose.
Just bought your first Porsche — or switching from a dealer-only approach to using an independent? Here's how to set yourself up.
What to bring to your first appointment at an independent shop:
Questions to ask about Taycan and E-Hybrid experience:
How to split work — a practical framework:
Gas Porsche (911, Cayman, Macan, non-hybrid Cayenne/Panamera):
Almost everything can go to a qualified independent. Oil changes, brake service, suspension, tires, diagnostics, even engine work. The only reasons to visit the dealer are warranty claims, recalls, and complex ECU programming.
E-Hybrid (Cayenne E-Hybrid, Panamera E-Hybrid):
Taycan (full EV):
The bottom line: Start with routine work at an independent. As you build trust and see their capability, you can move more complex work over. Keep the dealer for warranty, recalls, and anything you're not confident the independent can handle. A good independent will tell you when something should go to the dealer — that honesty is exactly why they're worth using.
